what to watch...
on new year’s
Forrest Gump |
The New Year's scene in this flick is one big down note, however. After shoving a prostitute off himself while with his war-wounded friend, Lt. Dan, Forrest wonders where Jenny is on New Year's Eve. Fade in to Jenny, getting ready to kill herself. This is grim – or at least as grim as director Robert Zemeckis is capable of being. Of course, even the darkest of dark somehow seems somewhat rosy in a Zemeckis flick. There is never a sense that she would go through with the deed, so there's really not much tension here. That's kind of the main problem with this movie – not enough tension. Even as characters die, sometimes in very emotional ways, it seems a bit obvious or forced. The movie may bring about tears, but it feels like the reason you're crying is because you wanted to bawl during a movie, not because something sad is actually happening. I mean, a suicide is sad, right?
