What Not to Watch Hungover

Edward Scissorhands

Really, it's not so much what movie should be watched while hungover. It's more a case of what should not be watched.

You'll want to avoid anything frenetically paced. If there are scenes in a rave, for instance, rule it out. (This means no Go , Blade or Strange Days .) Also, people with irritating voices, like, oh, Nathan Lane , should be avoided (i.e., no Birdcage ). And garish colors are best avoided, so you may as well scratch the Baz Luhrmann films and the vast majority of Disney animation.

Oh yeah, and steer clear of complicated plots, like Mission Impossible , The Saint or The Bourne Identity . So spy movies are out, basically.

Well, now that we've ruled those out, what should you watch? I don't know -- everything else looks pretty good, just like the ladies did last night.

As you begin to doze, you need something quiet and soothing and sad on the tube. You need Edward Scissorhands .

The score of this movie alone is enough to send anyone into their dreams with a faint smile on their face. Just lie back … that's right. Listen to the choral arrangements of Danny Elfman. And look at all that dreamy imagery – it will surely propel you into soft, pleasurable REM.

Really, the only downside to watching this movie as you drift off is that it is too excellent. Arguably the best fairy tale written since the Grimm Brothers were working, the movie's plot has the perfect arc of a well-thrown football. So, while it's good to put on before bedtime, be sure to watch it when you first wake up also.
