After a breakup, you need a movie that is both capable of reducing you to a gooey ball of tears, and yet also able to make you think maybe, just maybe, things will work out. For this, there is no better film than Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind . This could be the saddest movie with a happy ending ever made. Within five minutes of its start, Jim Carrey's bawling his eyes out. And, for the next two hours, you see why. He's lost his Kate Winslet, his tangerine. The struggle he goes through says, in a fatalistic sort of way, more about the condition of love than possibly any other movie of this decade. It is on par with the greats and will make you feel joyfully miserable, which is how you should be feeling after getting dumped. And, incidentally, the score? By Jon Brion? Again, excellent.
