Saltville, Virginia
Temperature: 25 degrees Fahrenheit, snowy and frigid
Virginia's not only for Lovers. It also hosts one of the largest breakfasts on January 31st to venerate the ancient wooly mammoth. Virginia was the southern border of the glaciers during the ice age, and the ideal wooly mammoth habitat was tundra. Only bones have been found across the state, and you can even see some of the remains in an exhibit at the Smithsonian.
But nothing exists like they found in Siberia. Whole wooly mammoths have been encased in ice for thousands of years. Dogs accompanying discovery expeditions have eaten the frozen mammoth meat. Talk about preservatives.
Almaty, Kazakhstan
Temperature: 25 degrees Fahrenheit, snowy and frigid
Only two years ago, the name of the ancient capital was changed from Almaty to Astana. But the legacy of its influence remains, as the city used to be a pivotal hub on the Silk Road, the intercontinental route system that connected Asia with Western Europe. Merchants would caravan with gold, porcelain, silk and other commodities in a complex trading system. Today, Kazakhstan is the third largest country in the world, nestled right between Russia and China, and has a rich resource in raw energy resources which makes it one of the richest countries on the continent.
Mehamn, Norway
Temperature: 25 degrees Fahrenheit, snowy and frigid
A Norwegian superstition says that for every grain of salt spilled, the spiller will shed the same amount of tears. It's cold in Mehamn. And while the precipitation might have been zero on January 15, the city dwellers are not strangers to snow. I don't even want to know how depressed they get when the salt trucks make their rounds.
Barrow, Alaska
Temperature: 25 degrees Fahrenheit, snowy and frigid
This city takes first place as the nation's coldest, as well as the best place to measure air pollutants! Due to the snowy white landscape, the yellowish and brownish pollutants show up great! If they can reach all the way up there, then imagine what your lungs look like …
