Anchorman

Of course, there's hilarious and then there's hilarious.

I know Anchorman grossed, like, $80 million. And it also just came out. It's not really a “cult film.” But – and stay with me here – it will be.

This movie should never have been made. It is arguably the most absurd, ridiculous, cock-eyed story ever and, I would argue, was only a success because the middle part of America joined the east and west coasts in loving Will Ferrell after Elf came out, not to mention the media's love of other “Frat Packers” like Vince Vaughn and Luke Wilson.

I mean, come on! There's a villain named Wes Mantooth! An orgasm is symbolized in an animation sequence! A lion bites off a man's arm for no other reason than it's part of a running joke involving the loss of limbs. And our hero plays jazz flute! These are not the elements of a successful picture. It was a freak accident that it was a mainstream success.

Despite this, it will have a frothy-mouthed group of followers who memorize every exchange. (Q: “Where are you?” A: “I'm in a glass case of emotion!”)

It's hilarious and, in a decade, people who attend comic conventions will have every line of it memorized.
