Your entire life you were the perfect model of health. Doctors would compliment you on your life style, your attention to various hygienic regimens, diet and exercise. So when you went to your annual check up, you were unprepared for anything but the status quo.

There's a lump in her right lower abdominal cavity. Call radiology, I want an immediately.

You glared at the doctor.

They couldn't determine what disease, cancer, or malady the lump assumed. There was a mysterious foreign invader in your body and it was winning.

Soon you had to stay home from work. Sam looked after you. Cooked your meals. And when the time came, he helped you bathe, fed you and soon he breathed for you. An inexhaustible and futile effort.

The lump won. Flashing lights and a silent siren echoed down the street.

Sam wandered around the empty apartment that had become filled with condolences from long forgotten friends, surfacing for air in an attempt for reconnection. Relatives swarmed and measured up the place, claimed books, CDs, appliances.

Sam fought, but you had been organized. Kept every receipt, tax write-off. Your record had been impeccable and the IRS commended you. This merit, however, had the unfortunate flipside for Sam. He was slowly washed away from the apartment and your life as the numbers added up and your family took what was rightfully theirs. Sam lost his lover, his friend and his home.

The End.

My dad had two friends that passed away. They both cohabitated with women who depended on them financially. They were essentially a spouse without any legal documentation. And so when my dad's friends' youthful deaths came unexpected, it was a bigger surprise to these women that their past lives, the time they devoted to their companion, had no ground for claiming what they thought was rightfully theirs. They watched the family of their deceased companion take everything away without a compassionate agreement, negotiation. They were obsolete, they were unrecognized in the courts. There was no argument.
