Donnie Darko
Another shining example of cultdom, in which a movie absolutely fails at the box office but grows into a cinematic mainstay among a fervent group upon video release , is Donnie Darko. Jake Gyllenhal leads a respectable cast, which includes his sister Maggie, Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore and Noah Wyle, in this head trip of a feature. It's recently been re-released, thanks to the following it found. Word on the street: Don't bother. Too much explanation, as well as the removal of Echo and the Bunnymen from the soundtrack, make for a more tired and typical movie. Instead, see the original. By not telling us nearly enough to connect all the dots, writer/director Richard Kelly made a movie about the difficulties of being a teenager in the ‘80s. Or maybe it was about time travel. Or dead people. Or rabbits. Or dead people dressed up as rabbits. Regardless, it's good. See it.
