Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Of course, there are journeys, and then there are journeys . There are treks for bicycles, and then there are searches for grails. Possibly the quintessential cult classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail couldn't be more cultish, inspiring rabid fans capable of quoting virtually any line from any scene. In that sense, the film is perfect. The free-associative wonder of the movie, of course, is the most marvelous quality. Chronicling the Monty Python gang's fights with everything from bloodthirsty rabbits to armless knights, the film never ceases to amaze. And, moreso, it is pointed satire. Anyone familiar with English literature is sure to gain added chuckles from the various comedic set pieces. A beautiful skewering of Anglo-heroics, the stupid jokes are grounded in smart criticism. It's really exactly what you'd expect from Terry Gilliam, who went on to direct absurdist social commentary like Brazil.
