William Holden, of course, was in another great epic, The Wild Bunch . The tagline to this flick includes the line "Suddenly the sky was bathed in blood." That's no joke.

This movie, in a lot of ways, prefigures the entire Tarantino genre that grew long legs in the '90s. Shockingly violent for its time, and damn violent for any time, the movie centers around a bunch of outlaws (the eponymous wild bunch) led by Holden, who are recruited by the Mexican military to help hijack a shipment of arms in the early 1900s.

There are no clear heroes in the movie . Everyone is flawed in one way or another, not unlike many Tarantino flicks. Though a synopsis may turn off modern viewers (a Western with old timers looking for one last big score? No thanks) this movie is a must see for any modern viewer.
