Welcome
to Lucha Va Voom: wrestlers who hate to take their masks off and women
who love to take their shirts off.
Founded by Mexican wrestling fan Liz Fairbairn and burlesque dancer Rita
DAlbert, Lucha Va Voom goes a step farther, adding midget Mexican
wrestlers to the campy mix. The idea behind Lucha Va Voom was to speed
up Mexican wrestling by limiting matches to one fall, and to add burlesque
for some sexy fun. Instead of a ringside announcer, Va Voom features comedians
doing a running commentary during the event. And the midgets? That's just
entertainment.
Lucha Va Voom was playing to a sold-out house of local hipsters during
its second year of regular shows at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles,
so Fairbairn and D'Albert decided to take their show on the road. They
were rewarded with a successful three-city tour ending at Chicago's Park
West on Nov. 6. The Park West show featured legitimate Mexican wrestling
headliners Misterioso and Blue Demon Jr., as well as burlesque stars Kitten
DeVille and Eriocha Bamboo. There was also local girl Michelle LAmour,
founder of the Lavender Cabaret, and a surprise special appearance by
Tom Kenny, the voice of Sponge Bob SquarePants, who added color commentary
to ringside announcer/comedian Blaine Capatch.
Ive seen WWF wrestling, high school wrestling and kids wrestling
in the living room, but now that Ive seen Lucha Va Voom, it proves
everything works better with a little burlesque.
The next show will be Feb. 10, 2005, in Los Angeles, and Va Voom will
be back on the road with a scheduled stop in Chicago in March. Check www.luchavavoom.com
