"We Tigers"
Animal Collective
Sung Tongs, released 2004 on Fatcat Records.

You don't ever have to grow up – pop has always offered you that choice. You don't have to think about the politics of the past two songs if you don't want to. You don't ever have to remember those cruel children waiting around the 3:15 flagpole of early life. The Animal Collective proves that through their hyper-active album Sung Tongs and through the hypnotic youth they display live. The message is so unattainably simple that most of us can never get it into practice: Don't grow up, be a child forever, surround yourself with similar playmates and invent your own language and field games. The stomp and playing spectral voices weave through this song and we feel like we've come upon the campfire of the Lost Boys. They dance and bound around us, kicking up dirt and paper-dry leaves. Taking our hand, they swing us in tight circles, convincing us even to brazenly leap over the licking flames from their fire pit. These boys don't have difficult political agendas, they don't know the essays of Emma Goldman and it'd surprising to find out that they know what women are. Their opinions are simply defined in their chants “Like it, like it, like it / Hate it, hate it, hate it.” It's a blessing to be young, in the woods and so caffeinated that flight is not only possible, but also an afterthought.
