Top artists in every field and genre are charged with pushing their craft and the publics' understanding to the absolute brink of disaster. But what happens when they actually succeed? Yoshimi P-wee has such questions before her now. As one half of the seminal Japanese noise duo The Boredoms, she and her husband managed, through a string of amazing self-produced releases, to destroy music. Or, rather what everyone had come to expect from music, even the conventions that hardcore and electronic music couldn't let go of. They happened to destroy themselves in the process as the group is restructuring itself in current hiatus; their back catalog is being re-released- sounding as relevant as ever. But when you've gone so far that you don't remember the footsteps behind you are your own, where do go? To the beginning. Like The Slits said, “to rhythm.” Enter the new primal: focusing non-congruent sound sources with ambient field recordings, producing layers of primitive rhythms. Yoshimi P-wee leads a whole female troupe back to the nature of all music: hitting one object against another, over and over and over. But once you regress so far back, the plain is so open and filled with light that you can never find your old footpath, grown over with soft grasses and Baby's Breath. Here's to being lost in the woods.
