"Relax"
Bobby Conn and the Glass Gypsies
from The Homeland, released 2004 on Thrill Jockey Records. |
And if it's possible to create sodas that critique other sodas, then why not a one that really explains what is going on in the White House? Bobby Conn and his band of Glass Gypsies are just such a tall drink of fructose. In a current political climate so inhospitable even the Dave Matthews Band suddenly have opinions (but that's still about it), everyone has a protest song in their heart, and yet none of them really boogie, you know? Conn , that cosmic Chicago space fiddler, has pulled an entire band together and one concept for his newest album, and it kinda makes you want to wiggle. Here the concept is a glam opera set now with the Masonic/Illuminati conspiracy on center stage and behind it all. We're prisoners in our home, too busy playing with our income tax refunds to notice the drama being played out in the news. I know. It seems far-fetched. Set to a glam-rock soundtrack that would have diamond dogs scurrying with tails between legs, the lyrics vividly call to mind our modern day war with only slight exaggeration. The bounce of the song's tempo compliments the repeated chorus, “Relax / there'll be no warning before the next attacks / Relax / there'll be a huge refund on your income tax.” Placing himself in the conspiring sides' gilded boots makes a typically tedious critique warranted, refreshing, and hauntingly on point.
