side A - song 1
"Spectacle to Refute All Judgments"
by Jason Forrest
From The Unrelenting Songs Of The 1979 Post Disco Crash, released 2004 on Sonig Records.

Not so much written as it was assembled, Jason Forrest – formerly known as Donna Summers until the fear of costly legal reprisal caused him to revert to his Christian name – wants to hear all his favorite songs at once. Using laptop audio editing software as a sonic chopping block, Forrest/Summers culls the depths of summer vacation soundtracks, then smashes them headlong into one another. Couples-only roller skate disco and prog-rocking arena anthems get melded together; he plays the sadistic toy torture that's from A Toy Story and from the backyard of collective childhoods. There is not “one after another” with children like Forrest/Summers, there is “right now and at once.” With “Spectacle To Refute All Judgments,” the album's first track is its title. Using drilling drumbreaks to bind guitar solos to the organ and handclap of dance floor get down, Forrest/Summers is that kid that blew up a pile of prized Transformers not to destroy them, but to reassemble them into an unforeseen new creation, to truly transform. Around the block on Halloween, he is wearing masks on the front and back of his head, coming and going, only to change twice more throughout the evening, not out of impatience, but so he can hit the same houses – the ones giving out fifty-cent pieces and king-size Milky Ways – before bed. He is emptying pockets of sweat-softened dollar bills on the red Formica counter top at Dairy Queen for the large Mister Misty. When the slender girl, who has eyes too close to the bridge of her nose, swimming in her uniform red polo and tan cargo pants, asks him “What flavor?” he looks at her with the impatience and pity that only children can give. “All of them. Three pumps each. A Triple Suicide Misty, please.”
