Magnificent deception- that is what Throbbing Gristle specialized in, not music. They thrived on hatred, not music. They were not rock, but were themselves rock and roll, but certainly- anything but- not music. Theirs was a project to trick their fans (who weren't fans so much as gluttons for punishment) into believing that they too were in on the joke, but that wasn't possible since the joke was on them. Taking advantage of the cheap prices and ready availability of drum machines and synths that had just been introduced to a wide market, Throbbing Gristle began as a project to punish, but ended up becoming the reluctant forebears of industrial music. With a track that sounds like a cheap send-up to those clever krauts, Kraftwerk, this is supposedly a running synth loop that is seemingly representing a woman chasing love. It is actually about a murderer chasing down the prey. The song assumes that since the narrator is a female, whose voice sounds sweet and high like water, that it is love she claims to chasing, rather than her love of murder. Throbbing Gristle played upon such assumptions so many times in their short time together that song itself forgot what the original joke was. Their creative base was lost and too many people were coming to their shows; Throbbing Gristle locked their doors and said the mission was complete. They've been silent for 22 years, watched the accolades pour in. Every few months another box set or live recording is released, and everyone fawns all over it. This year finds them reactivating the dormant project for a large festival, but something is sticking out of their sleeves.
